Windward Islands flights - where your trip starts
You can reach Dominica by air at one of the two small airports on the island: the main one is Melville Hall Airport (DOM), about one hour away from Portsmouth; the second one is Canefield (DCF) which is about fifteen minutes' travel from Roseau. Neither of them is big enough for typical commercial size airplanes, although Melville Hall is under expansion. As of 2007, American Airlines, LIAT (who recently merged with Caribbean Star, a former competitor to that market) are the major airlines that service the Melville Hall airport, and Carib Aviation operates service from Canefield. There is no night-time service, because the airports do not have night lights. Saint Lucia travelers will find that getting to the island is easier than some of the smaller islands in the West Indies, such as St. Barts. St. Lucia has two airports, and several major airlines as well as a few smaller airlines that offer a variety of flights to this destination. The length of travel is fairly minimal; from Miami to St. Lucia, it is only a 3 1/2 hour flight. Once you reach the island, if you desire to see some of the other nearby West Indies ports, a flight leaves twice daily to the islands of St. Martin, Dominica, and Guadeloupe. Frequent St. Lucia traveler Darrin Gleeman reminds visitors to "save enough cash from your trip to pay your departure tax [it is currently $26 per adult and $13 per child]. The last thing you need is to miss your flight home because you are looking for a bank." Usually larger commercial airlines build this fee into your ticket price, but double check before you leave. Travel to St Vincent & the Grenadines is via Barbados, Grenada, Martinique, St Lucia or Trinidad & Tobago, and then on to St Vincent & the Grenadines in a prop plane. LIAT (LI) is the main airline serving St Vincent & the Grenadines. Other airlines include Air Martinique, BWEE Express, Caribbean Star, Mustique Airways and SVG Air. From London to St Vincent (via Barbados) is 9 hours, and from New York is 5 hours. There are also small airports on Bequia, Canouan, Mustique and Union Island for light aircraft. If you’ll be travelling from one island to another in the same group, there are often options for travelling by boat or island ferry. There are also small island airlines for cheap flights around the Caribbean as well as the larger commercial carriers for flights between islands. Many of the larger airlines offer Caribbean air passes, some for a set number of stopovers, and others for unlimited Caribbean travel within the airline’s range.
