Windward Islands flag - a part of history
The flag of Dominica was adopted on November 3, 1978, with some small changes being made in 1981, 1988, and 1990. The flag features a green background. A red circle at the centre features a Sisserou Parrot (Amazona imperialis) surrounded by ten green stars, which represent the island's ten parishes. Four strips of three coloured bands (yellow, black and white) radiate horizontally and vertically from the circle. Before 1981, the colours of the bands were ordered differently and the green stars had no borders. Before 1988, the parrot faced in the opposite direction. In 1990, the colour of the stars, originally lime green, was darkened to match the green of the background, the yellow border around the stars was changed to black, the coloration of the parrot was brought more into alignment with reality, and some proportions were changed. The flag of Saint Lucia was adopted on March 1, 1967. The exact design has varied. The current flag is blue, with a gold isosceles triangle below a black arrowhead; the upper edges of the arrowhead have a white border. The blue color stands for the blue sky and blue ocean that surround the island, and for fidelity. Gold stands for sunshine and prosperity. The black and white portions symbolize racial harmony, although the majority of black shows the dominant influence of black culture over European culture. The triangle parts of the design are intended to evoke the Pitons, the island's two large peaks that rise from the ocean and are recognized symbols of the island. The flag of Grenada was adopted in 1974. The seven stars stand for the country's seven parishes, with the middle star, encircled by a red disk, standing for the two islands of carriacou and petite martinique which is know as the two sisters of the island Saint George's, is located. Historically, Grenada has sometimes been known as the "Spice Island," because of the abundant spices that are grown there. This is represented by the symbol on the left-hand side of the flag, which represents a clove of nutmeg, one of Grenada's principal crops. The colour combination of red, gold, and green, in the flag is representative of the country's African identity. The civil ensign has the same design as the national flag but with a 1:2 rather than 3:5 ratio. The naval ensign is based on the British White Ensign, with the national flag in the canton (and extending into the cross).
