Windward Islands attractions -not only sun & beach
Largest of the Windward Islands, Dominica is a lush island of stunning scenery and idyllic fishing villages. The name of the island means “Sunday” in Latin, which was the day of its discovery by Columbus. You sail into Portsmouth, which enjoys a picturesque location along Prince Rupert’s Bay, from where you could visit the island’s capital. Roseau lies on the south-west coast and blends modern architecture with wooden Victorian townhouses. The main attractions of the island include the 16-hectare Botanical Gardens with about 150 species on display, beautiful Trafalgar Falls and Emerald Falls, and the breathtaking Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The small volcanic island of St Lucia, dominated by the soaring twin peaks of Les Pitons, is an unspoilt destination whose lush rainforest is home to wild orchids, humming birds, parrots and birds of paradise. Granted indpendance in 1979, the island’s sublime natural splendour is complemented by a relaxed, rural atmosphere, and St Lucia is happy to be one of the less commercialised treasures of the Caribbean. Among the highlights of the island is the capital, Castries, founded by the French around 1768. Visitors often like to pay a trip to Pointe Seraphine, a duty free shopping mall and a great place to browse, with everything from fabulous emeralds and diamonds to electronic equipment and local arts and crafts. Pigeon Island is a National Landmark. Now an idyllic area for enjoying the peace and quiet, the park has an idiosyncratic past as it was used by the first European settler, a Frenchman nicknamed Jambe de Bois, as a vantage point from which to attack passing Spanish ships! Most southerly of the Windward Islands, Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Isle’ and all the year round the aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla are carried on the gentle breeze. Inhabited long before colonial times, you can retrace the island’s fascinating history. With its beautiful icing-sugar beaches, lush rainforest, national parks and natural wonders, the island also presents many opportunities for you to sit back and enjoy the ever-changing panorama. Considered to be one of the prettiest spots in the Caribbean, Grenada’s capital, St Georges, is a picturesque town backed by lush green hills and sprawled around a deep horseshoe harbour. Characterised by steep twisting streets, pastel-hued 19th-century Creole houses and Georgian stone houses, take time to wander around the town centre. |
